2. Eat a bowl of freshly cut vegetables daily (carrots, beets, tomatoes, and cucumbers)- the more colorful the vegetables, the better. They contain high levels of antioxidants which are healthy.

Cut the vegetables, and place them in a bowl in the refrigerator, so you are ready to eat them the next day; that way you do not put it off. Your body needs carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals in the required amounts, and many of the fad diets cut down on one of these components. The deprivation of the nutrients mentioned above, leads to health problems, and lethargy. Try to avoid fad diets.

3. Eat less:- Try to eat lesser portions of food-eat at least one stage less before you feel full.

Do not binge eat. People have a tendency to eat more, if they eat while sitting in front of the television. Add nuts(careful please, if you are allergic to them) whole grains, and oily fish (containing omega 3 fatty acids ) like salmon, tuna, sardines, and mackerel.

4. Exercise more:- Again, so much advice is given in this area. To keep it simple, walk 30 minutes a day 5 times a week. Park your car a block away, and walk to your destination. Some expert swear by 20 minutes (twenty is definitely plenty).

If you like yoga, go ahead. Choose the exercise you like. If it’s not fun, you may not stick with it. The message here is: 30, 20 or 10 minutes, the benefits of exercise accrue only when done on a regular basis.

However do not beat yourself up, if you miss a day here or there. Something is better than nothing.

One of the worst causes of stress is resentment. Do not hold a grudge, forgive and let it go; you will live longer, and be more peaceful.

ParanoiaI have yet to meet many adults who weren’t interested in staying healthy, but each of us being unique find are own paths. I believe that keeping healthy is amazing when it comes to quality of life, not always in terms of longevity. As far as I know there are two things we can’t choose, when we are born, and when we die. I also think many unhealthy choices are out of our control, the air we breathe, the chemicals in the food we ingest, our genes, and the viruses we acquire unknowingly from others. It would seem that what is considered good for us today, might be frowned upon in the future. Therefore becoming paranoid about a person’s health could be an exercise in futility. Here is what I mean in these terms.

As I mentioned above quality of life is very important for our well-being. My Mother used to say to me hard work never killed anyone stress does. Constantly worrying about health can be very stressful, so my perspective is doing what makes you happy in moderation is a much better quality of life. I was diagnosed with high cholesterol, my father had it, and the doctor put me on Lipitor, saying I should watch my diet. One of my favorite breakfasts were eggs and toast, but for year’s eggs were taboo for those with cholesterol. I denied myself that pleasure for several years, only to find out new studies saying an egg a day is alright. Also one of the side effects of using that medication is liver damage, better to take it than not, but there are risks come from all angles including the medical cures.

Veering back to longevity for a second. I had a childhood friend who didn’t smoke, do drugs, ate well and died at twenty-seven years old. He walked into gas stations to visit his buddy, it was robbed and he was shot dead an innocent by standard. Another childhood friend just died last year at 54, wasn’t a drinker or smoker but passed from leukemia. How about all those children and adults murdered senselessly in the concentration camps, what quality of life did they live prior to becoming prisoners of war? One of my grandfathers died in 1970 of colon cancer, if he had lived in these times would have survived.

I personally respect the medical community, all the advancements have saved so many people’s lives, which is a miraculous thing to do. The problem is they can’t save everyone, simply because for whatever reason let it be God’s will or family genes, when our number is up it is up. Spending our lives being paranoid about what could happen, I don’t believe is a healthy way to exist. My suggestion is do what you feel is best, but in doing so don’t deny being happy for a possibility of living a hundred years! Live long and prosper!

What is the lymphatic system?

The lymphatic system is made up of:

Lymphocytes: These are a form of small white blood cell that determine the type of immune response to infectious microorganisms and other foreign substances that enter the body.

Lymph: This is a clear fluid, which bathes the tissues and carries immune cells (such as B and T lymphocytes). The lymphatic system collects excess fluids, nutrients, gases, ions, hormones, enzymes and plasma proteins from surrounding tissues and returns them to the blood circulation, once pathogens, toxins and waste matter have been filtered out.

Lymph vessels: Fluids move out of our blood capillaries into tissue spaces, and then into lymph capillaries. These then join to form larger lymph vessels. The lymph vessels carry lymph.

Lymph nodes: Located along the lymph vessels, these are small glands interspersed along lymphatic vessels. They act as collection sites and cleaning filters, which form part of an immune system response against infection. Lymph must pass through them, before entering the blood.

Tonsils: Tonsils are the two lymph nodes located on each side of the back of your throat. They function as a defence mechanism, helping to prevent infection from entering the rest of your body.

The thymus gland: Located behind the sternum and between the lungs, this gland is only active until puberty. After puberty, the thymus starts to shrink and is gradually replaced by fat. Thymosin is the hormone of the thymus, and it stimulates the development of disease-fighting T cells.

Peyer’s patches: These are small masses of lymphatic tissue found in the small intestine. They form an important part of the immune system by monitoring intestinal bacteria populations and preventing the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestines.

Did you know that arguably the most important part of your immune system is in your gut? A massive 70% of all antibody-producing cells are located in Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT), found in the intestine. GALT is considered the largest collection of immune cells in the body.

The spleen: The spleen is an organ found on the left-hand side of your upper abdomen. Its main functions are to filter the blood, create new blood cells and store platelets. It is also a key part of the immune system.

What does the lymphatic system do?

Aside from maintaining fluid balance in the body and absorbing fat from the digestive tract, the lymphatic system’s primary functions are to:

1. act like a ‘garbage collection’ service for the body, filtering the bloodstream of toxins and waste;

2. fight infection – as we have already mentioned, the lymph nodes contain high levels of white blood cells that engulf bacteria. If we have an infection, the nodes closest to the site enlarge as the white blood cells multiply inside them. This is why lymph nodes (for example in the neck, armpits and groin) often become inflamed during illness – this means they are doing their job!

So with this in mind, it is easy to see how the lymphatic system plays a crucial role in removing toxins and pathogens from the body and thereby generally supporting the immune system.

Keep that lymph moving!

One of the most important things to know about the lymphatic system is that it does not have a circulatory ‘pump’ equivalent to the heart. However, given that it is a collection point for many toxins and waste products, it is obviously important to keep these undesirable substances moving, ultimately heading for elimination out of the body.

You might be surprised to learn that we have approximately three times the amount of lymph fluid in our bodies than we do blood. In contrast to blood, which is pumped around by the heart’s contractions, lymphatic fluid generally flows around our body against gravity. But how does this happen?

Three things help to keep lymph moving: the contractions of surrounding muscles during exercise or physical activity (this can increase lymph flow by up to 15 times); contractions of smooth muscle in the lymph vessel walls; and movements of the chest when breathing.
